Frequently Asked Questions
Answers to Common Questions
What are the benefits of a digital X-ray over a traditional radiograph?
Digital X-rays offer unparalleled benefits over traditional radiographs: they're convenient, safe for the environment, provide a great opportunity for patient education, can be transferred and copied accurately, and best of all, they’re safer for our patients. Digital X-rays emit about 80% less radiation than traditional methods.
What is a dental implant?
Dental implants are biocompatible titanium posts inserted into your jawbone to hold individual replacement teeth or a denture, partial, or bridge. Dental implants have become extremely popular, and many patients prefer them to other prosthetics because of their completely natural look and feel.
I brush every day, but my breath just isn't fresh. Is there anything I can do?
At your checkup, we can look for the cause of your bad breath, also known as halitosis. Some patients suffer from bad breath caused by tooth decay, gum disease, or a smelly substance emitted by bacteria. With modern procedures and products to promote fresh breath, our team can help you regain confidence!
Can you cure my snoring?
Snoring is often a symptom of sleep apnea, a potentially dangerous condition characterized by lapses in breathing. Dr. Urban will assess your situation and may prescribe a custom-fitted snore guard to alleviate snoring and return peaceful, healthy slumber.
My teeth are stained. Can you help?
Yes. We offer professional teeth whitening solutions to brighten teeth dramatically at home or in our Cerritos dental office. Call for an appointment today!
What’s the difference between veneers and Lumineers?
Lumineers are actually a brand of veneers that requires minimal or no tooth preparation prior to placement. Some patients prefer Lumineers because of the quick application and reduced risk for sensitivity.
Are my metal fillings hazardous?
Your amalgam (metal) fillings probably don't pose a health hazard. However, Dr. Urban prefers tooth-colored composite resin fillings to restore teeth compromised by decay. Composite resin is durable, long-lasting, and resistant to decay. It can be tinted to match natural tooth color and is an ideal solution to esthetically restore tooth health and strength.
Why are checkups recommended every six months, even for people with great oral health?
We recommend that patients with good oral health schedule a checkup and hygiene visit twice each year. If you need more frequent visits, we'll let you know. Checkups are important because, even if you don't notice any pain or problems with your teeth, we may find signs of potential issues. For instance, demineralization is a precursor to decay, oral cancer often goes undetected until the later stages, and gum disease can be very stealthy. At your hygiene appointment, we'll clean plaque, tartar, and hardened food particles from your teeth. We'll also make sure that your gums are healthy and strong.
Do you offer financing?
Yes. We offer flexible financing through CareCredit. Call for more information and discover how affordable dental care can be.
Does my insurance cover that?
Dental insurance is diverse. Some policies cover only a small percentage of fees, while others cover 50% or greater. The more you or your employer pays for premiums, the better the coverage, in most cases. Generally, dental insurance covers some restorative and preventive procedures. Cosmetic dentistry is not usually covered. We accept CareCredit third-party financing to make cosmetic dentistry affordable for all of our patients. If you have questions, give us a call. We'll be happy to tell you what your insurance will cover.
How can I improve my smile?
That sounds like an easy question to answer, but it isn't! Your smile is unique, and we won't compromise your individuality with smile enhancements. Smile design dentistry done right requires an initial consultation in which we'll discuss your goals, preferences, and options for care. Generally speaking, we may suggest porcelain veneers or Lumineers, teeth whitening, all-white fillings or crowns, and/or replacement teeth. After your comprehensive evaluation and consultation, we'll present a treatment plan for your new smile.
What precautions do you take to ensure patient safety?
We follow strict guidelines set by the Centers for Disease Control and OSHA. Our practices include sterilizing reusable instruments in an autoclave and then sealing them for the next use, disinfecting treatment rooms between patient visits, and using disposable products when possible. We always wear disposable gloves and masks during exams and treatment, for your safety.
"Dr Urban’s office is the best I`ve ever had pleasure of visiting. The staff at that office is very friendly and helpful. I, like so many others, really don`t like going to the dentist, but I think it's because of the long waits. I have never had to wait more than ten minutes to be seated for my appointment, even when I had a dental emergency. I have recommended Dr. Urban to my niece and will still recommend this office to more family and friends. Thank you"
